Onlay Restoration
When the damaged part of a tooth is large and the remaining tooth structure is not strong enough to withstand the chewing forces, onlay restoration is the first choice in restoring a damaged tooth to its original shape. Onlays can be made of Porcelain, Zirconia or Gold
Because Onlay restorations don’t cover the entire damaged tooth they can be called partial crowns.
In general, onlays are indirect restorations which means, in the first appointment tooth is prepared and impression is taken and onlay will be made in a dental laboratory and will be inserted and bonded to the tooth in a separate appointment, meanwhile patient will have a temporary onlay for a few days.
