How Ace Dental Can Create Bone for the Proper Placement of Dental Implants
Getting dental implant surgery is an effective way to restore your smile and allow you to chew food comfortably. However, in order for the implant to be successful in the long term, there must be enough bone in the jaw to support it.
At Ace Dental Clinic, we understand that not everyone has sufficient natural bone in their mouth for a successful dental implant and that’s why we offer bone grafting procedures to create more bone for proper placement of the dental implant if it is required.
Let’s look at what these different procedures involve and how they can help you achieve successful dental implant surgery.
Bone graft
A bone graft is a surgical procedure used to increase the amount of natural bone in the jaw before having a dental implant. The harvested bone can be used from another part of the body of the same person ( Autograft ), such as another part of the jaw, hip, and shin. From tissue bank, meaning from another human body( Allograft ), from an animal (Xenograft ), Or from a synthetic bone material.
This type of surgery is used to create enough bone for a successful dental implant.
How we do it: If a patient would like to use his/ her bone to harvest the bone, depending on the amount of bone we need to harvest, we do the surgery in our office or at the hospital. First, we carefully make incisions in the donor site and remove the required amount of bone before it is implanted into the patient’s own jaw. The donor's bone is then held in place with tiny titanium screws or plates until it has healed completely.
If the patient like to use the bone from a tissue bank or synthetic bone then the first surgery to harvest the bone is not required and we can just work on the area which needs to receive the bone. The benefit of using bone from a tissue bank or synthetic bone is that, there is only one surgical site required for bone graft, and the chance of after-surgery complications is less,
Socket graft
A socket graft is a procedure that uses bone graft material to fill the defect created when a tooth is extracted from its socket. The new bone helps create stability and support for the dental implant and can also help preserve the bone surrounding the adjacent teeth.
How we do it: After the untreatable tooth is removed on the same day the socket of the extracted tooth in the bone is filled with the bone graft material then it is covered with a special collagen membrane and suture to hold the bone graft material intact in its place. After the surgery body starts to create new bone to fill the hole.
Sinus lift surgery
A sinus lift surgery is a procedure used to add to the height of the required bone in the upper jaw, inside the maxillary sinuses, which are located on either side of the upper jaw. This type of surgery is often necessary when there isn’t enough height of the natural bone in the upper jaw for a successful dental implant.
How we do it: During this procedure, we make an incision in the gum to get access to the sinus floor, then we lift the sinus membrane and fill the area with the bone graft material. We use a special membrane to cover the area and suture it to close the gum.
Ridge Expansion
A ridge expansion is a procedure used to widen the existing ridge in the jaw, making it possible for wider dental implants to be placed successfully.
How we do it: First we make an incision in the gum tissue, then we carefully expand the existing ridge with a special device and a procedure that will slowly expand the ridge. We may also insert additional bone graft material to fill the gap and help to create a solid foundation for the implant.
